Here are some animated graphics to show you some simple dance steps we learned.
The Waltz is 3 one steps, done twice, in a box pattern.
The steps are forward-side-close, back-side-close.
It takes two measures of music in 3/4 time to complete the box pattern.
The steps of the Rumba are similar to the Waltz, but have a different timing.
The two step pattern is quick-quick-slow.
The box pattern takes up 2 measures of music to 4/4 time.
The Swing pattern is slow-slow-quick-quick. The forward and backward steps take up 6 beats of music, so it takes 3 measures of music to complete the cycle.
Here's our improvisation of a three step. This cycle takes up 7 measures of music.
Once you learn the basic steps, you can start creating your own routines, which can incorporate turns, spins, shifts, and progressive movement around the dance floor. (if there's room)
